LIEUTENANT-COLONEL JOHN LUARD (1790-1875)

10 parts in one volume, small 2°, (362 x 260mm). Lithographic title and 60 lithographic plates on india paper, title and some plates mounted, by and after Luard, the title printed by J. Graf, the plates by C. Hullmandel. (The title with some loss not affecting image, some plates with marginal light staining, the last plate spotted, spotting to mounts, text leaves browned, some with marginal tears.) Contemporary half calf (rebacked, worn).
An interesting series of views and scenes with notes containing incidental information and comments on local customs, architecture, and the British Army in India. Luard served as a captain in the 16th Light Dragoons from 1825 to 1832, when he moved to the 30th Foot. He retired as major in 1834, and obtained a brevet lieutenant-colonelcy in 1838. The imprint on the plates gives his rank as captain, whilst in the title he is referred to as Major Luard. Not in Abbey.
