The hollow-fronted commode has an elegantly serpentined base corresponding to a style introduced aroun 1780 and illustrated in a secretaire pattern issued in Messrs A Hepplewhite & Co's, Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guides, 1788-94 (pl. 44). A pattern for a related desk, with low bookcase and 'hollow' commode base features in Gillow of London and Lancaster's 1794 'Estimate Book'; while the hinged drawer-front featured earlier on their 1789 desk pattern (see L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs, Herts 1995 figs. 49 and 24).
