A LATE VICTORIAN BRASS-MOUNTED OAK HALL STOOL
Attributed to James Shoolbred and Company
Reeded overall, the rectangular back with a pierced baluster horizontal toprail flanked by rounded uprights, the downswept arms on circular supports each centred by a gadrooned finial, with a solid rectangular seat, on sabre legs joined by stretchers, with kite registration mark to the back seatrail for 13 December 1883, with remains of depository label '...CHNICON STORES ...N BRO.. HOT.'

James Shoolbred and Co. of Tottenham Court Road, became one of the first large department stores in London. They expanded from a small draper business and started to manufacture high quality furniture circa 1870, for which they were given a Royal warrant by the mid-1880s.
A similar pair of stools with registration marks, was sold from the estate of Mary, Viscountess Rothermere, Christie's New York, 12 April 1997, lot 828. A single stool with the registration mark for December 1883 was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 8 February 1996, lot 43.
