Sir William Fairfax (1609-1644) was the second son of Sir Philip Fairfax and his wife, Frances Sheffield. In 1629, William married Frances, daughter of Sir Thomas Chaloner of Guisborough in Cleveland and sister of James and Thomas Chaloner, the regicides. He was knighted by King Charles I on 1 June 1630 and succeeded to the family estates of Steeton and Newton Kyme in 1636. He was given the command of a regiment under Essex in 1642 and commanded detachments at Nantwich and Marston Moor. At the relief of Montgomery Castle, 18 September 1644, Sir William was mortally wounded and died the following day.
Another version of this miniature was exhibited London, National Portrait Gallery, Samuel Cooper and his Contemporaries, 1972, no. 8, illustrated p. 8.
A biography on Fairfax by John Wilson (London, 1985) and Daphne Foskett's monograph on Samuel Cooper (London, 1974) are included in the present lot.
