A ROMAN GILTWOOD VASESTAND

The oval moulded top above a fluted frieze and the stand with a scantily draped youth supporting on his head grape-vines, kneeling on a rock-carved base and on a square pedestal with foliate aprons and outscrolled legs, with erased inscription to the underside, restoration to the left arm, the putto possibly earlier

This vase stand relates to a console table attributed to a Roman artist now in the Wallace Collection, London (P. Hughes, The Wallace Collection, London, 1996, vol. I, pp. 282-285, cat 69), which has similar putti perched within vines on a rocky base. A further vase stand of similar character of the mid-18th Century is illustrated in A. González-Palacios, Il Tempio del Gusto, Milano, 1986, vol. II, p. 391, fig. 834.
