A GERMAN BLACK AND GOLD-JAPANNED BEDSIDE COMMODE
Mid-18th Century
The rectangular top with bowed front and three-quarter shaped gallery centred by an image of a Chinese temple in a garden landscape, above four short and one long drawer decorated with further buildings and plants, the angles with scrolling foliage and the sides and the back with conforming landscape vignettes, on cabriole legs headed by a foliate spray and terminating in goat's hoof feet, the underside inscribed in black ink 'N.8', the top right-hand drawer with paper label inscribed 'Aus Schlossbergung Schloss Dahlen Krs Oschatz Letzter Eigentmer Nr.171', and with white ink numbering '49351', the japanning distressed, originally with carrying openings to the sides, the bedside comode originally with a top drawer above an open compartment, altered in the 19th Century when four drawers were added and the top drawer was moved to the bottom
