A RARE DATED BLUE AND WHITE GLOBULAR TEAPOT AND TEA BOWL
JIAQING SEAL MARKS AND OF THE PERIOD

The teapot painted with stylised hibiscus heads on scrolling leaves below ruyi lappets at the shoulder, the loop handle and spout similarly painted and dividing two shaped panels with inscriptions bearing the cyclical date Jiaqing dingzi year (A.D. 1797); the bowl with an interior medallion containing pine, prunus and finger citrus, the exterior inscribed with the same long poem and cyclical date Jiaqing dingsi, all framed by borders of ruyi-heads and demi-florettes--the teapot 8 1/4in. It is uncommon to find a teapot of this pattern; but dishes and bowls are known, both blue and white and enamelled, all inscribed with the same poem by the Emperor Jiaqing of which Bushell includes a translation in Oriental Ceramic Art, p. 239, praising and advising on the proper preparation of good tea.
