A FINE AND LARGE MING-STYLE BLUE AND WHITE 'HUNDRED BOYS' BOWL

The elegantly potted rounded sides finely painted in soft blue tones to the exterior with the boys dressed variously in robes and baggy trousers or short tunics, engaged in a variety of pursuits including one boy riding a hobby horse, several others playing with flowers, a few more catching fish in a basin, and others seated, all within a fenced garden setting below willow trees and pine--8 1/2in. (21.8cm.) diam.

These bowls originate in the Chenghua period. Cf. examples in the National Palace Museum, Taibei, illustrated in Blue-and-White Ware of the Ming Dynasty Book III, pl. 12, 13 and 14. A bowl in the Shanghai Museum of the Zhengde period is illustrated in Underglaze Blue and Red, pl. 93.
