A Viennese porcelain figural chess set, Augarten factory 20th century
after a design by Jaksch-Szendrö in 1926, on a Renaissance theme, the opposing sides in black and yellow hues on a white ground heightened in gilt, the royal pieces with tiered crowns, the bishops as running youths, the knights rearing Lipizzaner horses, the rooks as onion domed towers, pawns hooded foot soldiers carrying bludgeons, the pieces marked to the underside with the crowned shield WEIN, in underglazed blue, and impressed MADE IN AUSTRIA, king -- 3¼in. (8.3cm) high, pawn -- 2¼in. (5.7cm) high

The design remained in production at the Augarten factory until c.1938, but recasts from the original moulds are known to have been produced since.
