A German wood chess set, probably early 19th century
in light and dark hues, the baluster urn-shaped stems intesected by serrated cups and discs with onion dome finials, knights with horses' heads, rooks as turrets with with domed cupola surmounts, king -- 3 5/8in. (9.2cm) high, pawn -- 1¾in. (4.5cm) high
