Down & West 12b; 12d; 13b, pp. 128-9. In Anderson's other version of the Caldecourt portrait [Down & West 2], the umpire grasps his top-hat in both hands, but here he puts one hand nonchalantly inside his waiscoat, and sports a large handkerchief in a side pocket. William Martingell (1818-97), here depicted taking his guard, also became an umpire and coach in later life.

The portrait of Martingell is just slightly soiled, and has the upper blank margin cut away.
