THE RICHARD ALLEN COLLECTION Richard Allen is the co-author of Reel Art: Great Posters From The Golden Age Of The Silver Screen, a comprehensive study of movie poster art for the period prior to 1950. For over fifty years he, more than anyone else, has helped preserve and promote movie posters. His book, selected as one of th top one hundred selling film books ever published reflects Allen's interest in and vast knowledge of film posters, from the silent era to the present day, from Walt Disney to science-fiction, from Polish to Japanese cinema. This sale contains a small number of posters from his collection, (lots 62, 67, 98, 116, 165, 167, 235, 262, 271 and 273) some of which have never been seen at auction before and some of which are unique. THE WILLIAM CLAVERY COLLECTION William Clavery (b.1941) has been a fan of the cinema from an early age. In 1952 he was given his first film poster by a relative who worked at the local ABC cinema, a trend which continued every week for two years. In 1954 he approached the manager of his local Gaumont cinema and asked if it would be possible for him to have the poster of Alan Ladd in Hell Below Zero (1954), the manager agreed and also proposed that if Clavery went to the cinema every Saturday night and helped to change the advertising banners and posters he could keep the posters from the previous week. This fell by the wayside when Clavery left school in 1956 to serve an apprenticeship at a local shipyard. In 1960 he married and revived his interest in collecting by making contact with two other collectors from whom he bought posters, campaign books and stills. These items were new and had never been inside a cinema which led him to believe that their source could be a film distribution company. Mr Clavery stopped collecting seriously in 1970 as he found it increasingly difficult to obtain material in good condition. The posters from this collection are in truly exceptional condition, the majority of them with only three vertical folds, no pin holes or tape marks and wonderfully fresh colours. THE BALTHAZAR CHARTON COLLECTION Balthazar Charton is a film poster collector who has written several acclaimed books on film posters. From the late 1970s he has collected mainly European posters featuring Hollywood 'Love Goddesses'. In March 1995 Christie's South Kensington included a number of posters from his collection in the annual Vintage Film Poster auction. This year some of his personal favourites which have also been featured in his book L'Affice De Cinema are included such as the only known copy of the syyle B Italian four foglio for Gilda (lot 139). THE EDDY BLOCK COLLECTION Eddy Block ran a string of art house cinemas in Cambridgeshire for over thirty years giving him the opportunity to collect some of the posters for his favourite films which are included in this sale, lots 53, 58, 65, 108, 109 and 208.
