Paralleling Raphael Tuck and Marcus Ward in Britain, Louis Prang in America endeavoured to improve the design of what were becoming mass produced cards in the States. In 1880, he organised a competition with cash prizes to this end, to improve the popular image of a relatively new trade. Prang is well known for his distinct silk fringed cards from the 1880s onwards.
