Evoking the voluptuous curves of a cow, this sculptural sofa was named Pasiphaë by the artist, in reference to one of the most unsettling episodes in Greek mythology.
Created for the exhibition Hubert le Gall, Une Fantaisie Grecque at the Villa Kérylos in Beaulieu-sur-Mer in 2021, the work forms part of a collection of some thirty creations that the artist describes as a “whimsical journey through Greek mythology”. Pasiphaë, wife of King Minos, fell in love with a white bull. To enable her to unite with the animal, Daedalus devised a wooden cow covered in genuine bovine hide, inside which she could conceal herself. From this union was born the Minotaur, a hybrid creature, half-man and half-bull. Wishing to conceal this shameful birth from the world and shield it from public view, Minos commissioned Daedalus to build the Labyrinth, an intricate and winding prison designed to confine the creature.
Drawing inspiration from this rich mythological repertoire, Hubert le Gall transforms the animal’s sensual forms into a sculptural piece of furniture of exceptional craftsmanship, in which formal virtuosity meets imaginative creation.
