Born in 1717, Johannes Heinrich Oertel was the son of a Berlin Goldsmith. He married the daughter of the Strasbourg goldsmith Johann Heinrich Schaumann and became a master in Strasbourg in 1768 eventually taking over his father-in-law's workshop. His sons appear to have worked in Berlin. He died in 1796.
