During the 1980s, celebrated watch designer Gérald Genta secured the licence to create wristwatches featuring Walt Disney's beloved characters, transforming some of the world's most recognisable animated figures into sophisticated examples of watchmaking. These creations combined playful artistry with mechanically inventive complications, quickly becoming some of the most distinctive and sought-after models in Genta's extraordinary work.
The present Gérald Genta Retro Fantasy, housed in a generous 36 mm case, is among the largest executions of the celebrated collection. It features one of the rarer Disney scenes, depicting Mickey Mouse playing golf. In characteristic Gérald Genta fashion, the animation is seamlessly integrated into the time display: Mickey's golf club serves as the retrograde minute hand, while the jumping hour is displayed through the aperture at 4 o'clock, creating an engaging and highly original way of telling the time.
The finely detailed Mickey Mouse figure is beautifully contrasted against a luminous mother-of-pearl dial, whose iridescent silver-blue and delicate pink reflections continually change with the light. Further enhancing its luxurious appearance, the bezel is lavishly set with a double row of diamonds, beautifully framing the playful dial while emphasizing the watch's jewel-like character.
