拍品专文

The present example belongs to a group of imperial porcelain bowls first developed during the end of the Kangxi period bearing reign marks that are written ending with the characters, Yuzhi, 'Imperial made' or Nianzhi, 'Made in the reign period'. Of this group, the flowers are either decorated, with or without the addition of rose-pink enamel, and against a ruby-ground as in the present case or a coral-ground.

The design, composition and palette of this group derive from Kangxi prototypes, such as an example bearing a Kangxi yuzhi mark in the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in Kangxi Porcelain Wares from the Shanghai Museum Collection, Hong Kong, 1998, no. 95. Early bowls of this type continued to be decorated in the wucai palette, possibly because Jingdezhen potters were not yet familiar with the use of yangcai enamels. The inclusion of yangcai on the present bowl indicates that it belongs to a more fully developed stage in the evolution of this decorative scheme.

Compare to two closely related examples in yangcai of similar size in the Palace Museum, Taipei decorated with the four seasonal flowers, and illustrated in Fine Enamelled Porcelain of the Ch'ing Dynasty, Yung Cheng Period, CAFA, Book II, 1967, pls. 34 (fig. 1) and 35. A similarly decorated bowl also in yangcai of similar size is illustrated in Chinese Art and Design, The T.T. Tsui Gallery of Chinese Art, London, 1991, pl. 92. A further example was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29 May 2013, lot 2121.
