Executed in the spring of 1924 during his seminal Bauhaus period in Weimar, Germany, Vor der Blüte demonstrates Klee’s appreciation of processes of growth and development. The evocative title, translating to ‘Before the Bloom’, explicitly shifts our focus to a precise moment of change and transition.
In the present work, Klee bypasses the climax of a fully opened flower to focus instead on the quiet transformation of blossoms breaking out from the dormant, heavy rest of early spring. The composition vibrates with anticipation, capturing nature on the precipice of coming alive. By choosing this liminal phase, Klee transforms the picture into a living organism where the tension between winter’s dormancy and spring's impending arrival plays out across this abstract composition.
Klee relies entirely on colour and line to achieve this effect. The flora of the title is reduced to a series of muted, coloured planes that reflect the season. While the majority of the composition is defined by cooler, quieter tones, some bolder hues appear to break through. Lighter, transparently applied pigments ground the work in winter-like dormancy, while bursts of intense, vibrant yellows and accents of saturated oranges and deeper purples signal the unstoppable emergence of active organic growth.
This tension is built further through Klee’s masterful control of line, which carefully directs our eye, taking us on a journey through simple, geometric shapes onto more organic, complex and playful forms, emerging in little pockets in the composition, mirroring the natural cycle of a flower’s transformation from a tightly closed bud into a unique and intricate arrangement of its petals.
Through this organic progression of shapes and meticulous tonal grading, Klee masterfully achieves a highly rhythmic and harmonious abstract composition, alive with tension, depth and movement.
