拍品专文

The mid-1990s marked a celebrated peak of Gerhard Richter’s abstract practice. Created in 1996, the Fuji series embodies the lyrical spirit that defined this celebrated period. As one of 110 uniquely executed oil paintings from this groundbreaking series, the present work Fuji exemplifies Richter’s technical innovation. Over horizontal bands of vibrant red, Indian yellow-orange, and emerald green, he dragged a translucent white veil using his signature squeegee.

The series also marks his debut use of Alucobond, an aluminum composite support that radically redefined his relationship with light and paint. The underlying industrial metal reflects light through these sheer layers, imbuing the pigments with an iridescent radiance impossible on traditional canvas.

The composition pays dual homage to Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji and the Fuji photographic film vital to Richter’s image-making. Landscape symbolism dissolves into luminous abstraction, where dense crimson cascades, deep atmospheric darks, smooth color glides, and sudden ruptures mirror nature’s unpredictable splendor – an exquisite tension between total procedural control and sublime chance.
