Hiroshige presents travelers moving along the mountainous road with an unusual emphasis on figures seen frontally. Rather than depicting travelers primarily in profile or from behind, several figures turn directly toward the viewer, creating an immediate and engaging presence. Their frontal poses contrast with the receding road and surrounding landscape, giving the composition a distinctive sense of depth and human intimacy. This unusual treatment of the figures demonstrates Hiroshige’s inventive approach to the conventions of the landscape print.
The layer of dark-gray snowflakes is characteristic of early impressions of this design. The dense snowfall emphasizes the bitter cold of the scene and lends the composition a particularly dramatic.
