In Karuizawa, from the series Kisokaido rokujukyu tsugi no uchi (The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido), Hiroshige depicts travelers pausing at a roadside tea house on a dark mountain evening. The scene is particularly remarkable for its subtle treatment of light: the warm glow of the lantern and firelight stands out dramatically against the deep darkness of the surrounding night, illuminating the figures and nearby objects while leaving the distant landscape in darkness. This dramatic contrast between light and shadow creates an intimate, atmospheric nocturne and demonstrates Hiroshige’s exceptional sensitivity to the poetic possibilities of nighttime light.
