This scene depicts the post town known as Kanagawa-dai, where a steeply ascending section of the highway is lined with a succession of teahouses. Women standing in front of the establishments actively solicit passing travelers, creating a lively exchange as they attempt to draw them inside. Those who entered the establishments were rewarded with magnificent views of boats resting upon the moonlit waters beneath the full moon. Hiroshige captures both the lively atmosphere of the busy highway and the scenic beauty that made Kanagawa a celebrated stopping place along the Tokaido. According to Alfred Haft, the present fan print is the only known example of the Kanagawa design of the series.
