The present robe is very finely embroidered in vibrant colors. The crane roundels dispersed among clouds against the blue ground distinguish it as a rare and unusual example of its type.

As outlined in the Da Qing Hui Dian (Collected Statutes of the Qing Dynasty), this robe would have been worn by a first-rank prince, his heir apparent, or a second-rank prince during the Guangxu period. Blue was the official color of the Qing dynasty and was worn by nobles of all ranks, as well as by lower-ranking members of the imperial clan. Although the dragons on this robe are depicted with five claws and relate to the long dragons worn by the emperor and his immediate family, they were likely classified as mang, which were identical in appearance to long dragons and distinguished only by name. The linear treatment of the lishui border and the relatively uniform scale of the dragons are characteristic features of robes produced during the late nineteenth-century Guangxu period.
