a very rare, early and important working proof
first state (of three), before the completion of sitter's face
with touches of black chalk on the sitter's hair and hat at right, and within the open barrel
with thread margins on three sides, the left sheet edge evened out, trimmed outside the image below, lacking signature and date
generally in good condition
