Fourth, sixth and seventh editions of the great epic recounting the first voyage of Vasco da Gama, the first European to reach India by sea, and a masterpiece of the Portuguese language. The seventh edition is the first with a full commentary on the text, by Manoel Correa, a friend of Camões. Pinto de Mattos, Manual Bib. Portuguez, p.91, 92; Salva 502, 504, 504n.

1597: Quarto (183 x 125mm), architectural border on title-page and decorative woodcut initials (minor repairs to first few leaves, some dampstaining, browning, and spotting, single wormhole in last few quires). Modern black morocco gilt, gilt edges, indecipherable stamp on top and bottom edges. Provenance: remains of signature – João Marinho (bookplate) – José Mindlin (1914 -2010; bookplate).

1612: Quarto (188 x 131mm), woodcut arms of the dedicatee, Rodrigo da Cunha, on title, decorative woodcut initials (minor spotting throughout, x8 repair to margin). Red morocco gilt by Lortic and Fils, gilt edges. Provenance: Jeronimo Ferreira das Neves (engraved bookplate by Stern of Paris) – João Marinho (bookplate and bibliographic notes in pencil).

1613: Quarto (182 X 127mm), woodcut arms of the University of Coimbra on title, woodcut arms of the dedicatee, Rodrigo da Cunha, heading the dedication, woodcut tailpieces (some light browning and occasional spotting, C2 neat paper flaw into text). 18th-century speckled leather, flat spine gilt in compartments, red titling label in second, red edges (minor wear at extremities). Provenance: João Marinho (bookplate).
