Admiring the present ‘Bamboo’ Table Lamp, one is transported into a tranquil bamboo grove; sunlight peeking through rustling green leaves and swaying bamboo stalks, and with specks of dappled light dancing across and around in playful shifting patterns. Tiffany Studios excelled in imbuing their nature-inspired designs with all the sounds, sights, and emotions inherent to the natural world, whether it be the drooping chains of laburnum blossoms, the gurgle of rushing water, or the peaceful sway of bamboo stalks in a warm summer breeze. Combining a deep reverence and respect for nature, as well as impeccable craftsmanship and ingenuity in glass making and metalwork, Tiffany Studios created art through metal and glass; perfectly embodied in this particularly refined example of one of Tiffany’s most enduring motifs.

The present lot incorporates a mixture of green-yellow mottled glass with milky translucent background glass, creating an interesting mixture of color, texture and line. Streaks of green and yellow in the bamboo leaves denote their tough, fibrous nature, and accentuate their strong, linear forms; while the spotted color gradients in the bamboo stalks evoke green-tinged sunlight filtering through the leaves above.

The use of rounded glass in the elongated green bamboo leaves, which stretch and wrap across the shade, is distinctive and produces a sleek and modern look. In addition, the matching ‘Bamboo’ base and finial, similarly modeled as a bamboo stalk and bamboo seeds, contrast with the bright and airy leaded glass shade. Through the warm brown tones of the patina, and the elongated Art Nouveau inspired lines of the base; these bronze elements expertly pair with and balance the glass shade above, creating a cohesive design that is both transportive and grounding.

The ‘Bamboo’ shade and base are both established designs by Tiffany Studios, both listed in the Tiffany Studios Price List from 1906: “1443. 16” BAMBOO, dome... $80”, “480. 3 lights, bamboo design, library stand size... $65.” This enduring model, with its matching shade and base, and captivating design that highlights both natural forms and expert craftsmanship, holds a timeless and lasting appeal, imbued with all the magic and beauty characteristic of Tiffany Studios.
