The present reference 6284 has a number of attributes that distinguishes it from the ordinary. Not just any Oyster Perpetual, this combination of details truly makes the present timepiece an intriguing and unusual specimen.
First is the dial. The honeycomb variation is arguably be considered one of the most charismatic of Oyster Perpetual wristwatches.
The second is the metal used for the case. Instead of the usual 18k gold, the present timepiece is offered in 9k gold, meaning 37.5% pure gold. It is thought that Rolex used this alloy mostly in the early to mid-20th century to make more robust and, crucially, more reasonably priced timepieces for specific markets.
Compared to 18k gold, 9k gold has a higher percentage of alloyed metals, such as copper or silver, which makes the case harder and more resistant to dents and scratches. This was ideal for daily-wear watches. 18k gold was prohibitively expensive in some countries due to high import taxes on precious metals. Rolex was able to offer gold watches at a more affordable price by using 9k gold.
