The present timepiece represents a highly unusual and rare variation of reference 2581, distinguished by its Gübelin-signed bracelet. Although reference 2581 is usually paired with a bracelet signed by Patek Philippe, it is exceptionally uncommon to come across one with the renowned retailer's signature. This detail adds another level of historical and commercial significance by strongly implying that the watch was first sold through Gübelin.
Further enhancing its appeal, the bracelet itself features a distinctive texture reminiscent of finely woven ropes. The bracelet is elevated from a mere accessory to a true work of goldsmithing artistry thanks to its intricate, interlaced pattern, which gives it a rich, three-dimensional character and a tactile softness.
The case was manufactured by the distinguished casemaker Francis Baumgartner, identified by case maker key number 4 stamped inside the caseback. Among the most prominent casemakers of his era, Baumgartner was responsible for producing a wide array of cases for Patek Philippe, ranging from the brand’s first automatic wristwatch, reference 2526, to early Ellipse models and even the bold shaped cases designed by Gilbert Albert.
