Picasso's Pierrot was conceived as the frontispiece for Max Jacob's Le Phanérogame. The subscription announcement called for sixteen impressions on Japon paper (including two signed impressions marked '0' and '00'), and a further 30 impressions on Hollande paper. The print was ultimately issued mainly on Arches paper. Fourteen signed and numbered impressions are recorded, together with the two author’s copies, while additional impressions—both numbered outside the formal sequence and unnumbered—are documented. These include an impression annotated as 'no. 16' by Max Jacob, as well as unnumbered examples and later-signed impressions, likely artist’s or printer’s proofs.
