Ellen Pyle was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1876 and began her studies at Drexel Institute in 1895. In 1898 and 1899, she studied under illustrator Howard Pyle at his summer school, learning alongside famed illustrators like N.C. Wyeth and meeting her future husband (and Howard's brother), Walter Pyle. After Walter's passing in 1919, Ellen retuned to work, eventually illustrating 40 covers for The Saturday Evening Post, such as the present example.
