Alexandre Deleyre (1726-1797) was a French thinker and translator of Latin. He was one of several philosophers who contributed to Diderot's Encyclopédie. This drawing must have been made some time between 1795 Deleyre’s induction into the Institut, and 1797, the year of his death.

Philippe-Jean Pelletan (1747-1829) was a French surgeon and professor of Medicine. In 1795, he was appointed chief surgeon at Hôtel-Dieu. Here, Vincent has captured the doctor mid-sentence in quick, expressive lines.
