Barbara Regina Dietzsch grew up in an artistic family. Her father Johann Israel Dietzsch (1681-1754) was a landscape painter who taught Barbara Regina to paint. Her six siblings also participated in the family workshop.

Barbara specialized in the accurate rendering of flowers and insects portrayed in their most minute details. The artist most often chose to depict her subjects against a dark background, black or dark brown, which enhanced the colors, tridimensionality, and jewel-like appearance of the compositions. These drawings were intended for private enjoyment. The Dandelion recurs often in the artist’s work probably because it was a subject that allowed Barbara Regina to showcase her exceptional skills.
