Jan Antoon Garemijn was first apprenticed to Roch Aerts and later continued his studies at the Academy in Bruges, where he was appointed director in 1765. His predecessor, Matthias de Visch, introduced him to the paintings of the French masters Antoine Watteau and François Boucher, whose influence left a lasting mark on Garemijn’s style.
