The sail/steam yacht Sultana was built by Handren & Robbins of Brooklyn, New York and was active from 1890-1937. Initially commissioned for Trenor Luther Park and his wife Julia Hunt Catlin of New York City for transatlantic pleasure trips, Sultana was acquired by John R. Drexel by 1895 and J.M Sears by 1905, who shortly after passed away. At the time Jacobsen painted the yacht in 1906, she was about to trade hands from Sears' estate to Edward E. Harriman. Harriman's widow later loaned Sultana to the U.S. Navy as a patrol and rescue boat during World War I.
