Born in Bordentown, New Jersey, in 1861 as the son of a portrait painter, Frederick J. Waugh primarily dedicated his career to capturing the stunning coastal vistas of the American Northeast. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins and later at the Académie Julian in Paris. His work is represented in numerous museum collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C. and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri.
