John Williamson was born in Scotland in 1826 and settled in Brooklyn, New York, with his family in 1831, where he later studied at the Brooklyn Institute. A versatile painter skilled in landscape and still life, Williamson is primarily known for his landscapes executed in the style of the Hudson River School. The present work illustrates his prowess as a marine painter and colorist, complete with exacting topography in the distance. His work can be found in a number of museum collections, including the Brooklyn Museum, New York.
