This present vase exemplifies the classic Guanyin Zun form of the Kangxi period, celebrated for its dignified and graceful silhouette, reminiscent of the serene posture of the Bodhisattva. Its exterior features a continuous narrative scene of twelve courtly ladies engaged in the Four Elegant Pastimes of the literati, lute-playing, chess, calligraphy, and painting. The figures, rendered with slender proportions and delicate features, are arranged in a harmonious and dynamic composition around the body. Their flowing robes are partially painted in cobalt blue using the masterful ink-wash technique, demonstrating the subtle tonal variations and fluid brushwork characteristic of the finest Kangxi porcelain. This subject, often called The Twelve Beauties or Elegant Gathering in the Women’s Quarters, transcends mere decoration, reflecting a scholarly ideal of refined leisure and poetic retreat. By uniting an iconic form with an elegant narrative, the vase stands as an outstanding example of Kangxi porcelain created for literati appreciation. For a comparable example, see a famille verte rouleau vase, also featuring a figural narrative, sold at Christie’s Paris, 13 December 2017, lot 65.
