Ce flamboyant masque tatanua figurait parmi plusieurs œuvres océaniques exposées sous l’intitulé de propriété de l’artiste surréaliste Roberto Matta lors de l’exposition emblématique Arts primitifs dans les ateliers d’artistes, tenue au Musée de l’Homme à Paris en 1967. Cette manifestation demeure légendaire, étant la seule jamais consacrée aux arts africain et océanien issus des collections privées d’artistes d’avant-garde.
Ce masque se distingue au sein de la typologie classique des masques tatanua par l’emploi saisissant d’un pigment blanc recouvrant l’ensemble du visage, un choix rare et visuellement percutant.
