By descent from the sitter to the seller at the following,
Anonymous sale; Christie's, London, 18 November 1927, lot 90, as 'J. Hoppner, R.A.', where acquired for 240 gns. by the following,
with Leggatt Bros., London, as 'Sir Thomas Lawrence', from whom acquired by the grandfather of the present owner.

This seems likely to be the portrait of ‘Mr Read of Old Jewry’ listed by Walter Amstrong as a work of ‘circa 1787, for which Lawrence received 20gs’ (Lawrence, London, 1913, p. 159).
The sitter may be Henry Reade Revell’s father, John Reade (c.1733-1823).
