JACOPO NEGRETTI, CALLED PALMA IL GIOVANE, SAINT GIUSTINA KNEELING, IN PROFILE, BLACK CHALK, TRACES OF RED CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK

This is a study for the figure of Saint Justine of Padua in an altarpiece that Palma il Giovane painted for the church of the Cappuccine in San Gerolamo in Venice. The painting, depicting Saint Carlo Borromeo and Saint Justine at the feet of the Cross, is now in the Seminario Patriarcale, but it was described in detail by Marco Boschini in the 17^th Century in its original location (S. Mason Ronaldi, Palma il Giovane. L’opera completa, Milan, 1987, no. 590, ill.).

Ce dessin est préparatoire à la figure de Sainte Justine de Padoue du tableau d'autel que Palma le jeune réalise pour l'église des Capucines de San Girolamo à Venise. Le tableau, représentant Saint Charles Borromée et Sainte Justine au pied de la croix est aujourd'hui conservé à la Pinacoteca Manfrediana au Seminario Patriarcale de Venise mais il est décrit en détail par Marco Boschini au XVII^e siècle dans sa localisation d'origine (S. Mason Ronaldi, Palma il Giovane. L’opera completa, Milan, 1987, n° 590, ill.).
