The death of the Emperor Aurangzeb in 1707 marked the end of Mughal occupation of Jodhpur and whilst few works can be confidently attributed to this period, those that survive show that the painting style reverted to a Rajput emphasis on colour and line rather than following on from the Mughal-informed works produced under Raja Jaswant Singh (d.1678).

Abhai Karan was the son of Durgadas Rathor (1638-1718) who is remembered for preserving the Jodhpur royal lineage by smuggling the infant Ajit Singh out of Delhi to keep alive until after Aurangzeb's death. Assuming Abhai Karan was born in the mid 17th century, a dating of 1710-20 for this painting would be appropriate.
