ADRIAEN PIETERSZ. VAN DE VENNE, A COUPLE IN A BEDROOM, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH, INCISED FOR TRANSFER, PEN AND BROWN INK FRAMING LINES

This small but finely executed drawing and the following lot are typical examples of Van de Venne’s abundant production as a designer of book illustrations (M. Royalton-Kisch, Adriaen van de Venne’s Album in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum, London, 1988, pp. 51-53; W.W. Robinson in Drawings from the age of Bruegel, Rubens, and Rembrandt. Highlights from the collection of the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, 2016, no. 92, ill.; four drawings in the sale Sotheby’s, Amsterdam, 4 November 2003, lots 36-38). The first drawing offered here has been identified as an illustration for the 1628 edition of Self-stryt, dat is crachtighe beweginghe van vlees en gheest […], a book uniting several stories about adultery written by the Jacob Cats, the popular author with whom van de Venne is most closely associated. Two other drawings for the same publication are in the ‘Museum Catsianum’ of the special collections of Leiden university library, and at the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge (inv. 1983.167).

Ce petit dessin finement exécuté et le lot suivant sont des exemples typiques de l’abondante production de Van de Venne en tant que dessinateur d’illustrations de livres. (M. Royalton-Kisch, Adriaen van de Venne’s Album in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum, Londres, 1988, pp. 51-53; W.W. Robinson in Drawings from the age of Bruegel, Rubens, and Rembrandt. Highlights from the collection of the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, 2016, n° 92, ill.; quatre dessins de la vente Sotheby’s, Amsterdam, 4 novembre 2003, lots 36-38). Le premier dessin proposé ici a été identifié comme une illustration pour l’édition de 1628 de Self-stryt, dat is crachtighe beweginghe van vlees en gheest [...], un livre regroupant plusieurs histoires sur l’adultère écrites par Jacob Cats, auteur populaire avec lequel van de Venne est étroitement associé. Deux autres dessins pour la même publication se trouvent dans le ‘Museum Catsianum’, des collections spéciales de la bibliothèque universitaire de Leyde, et au Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge (inv. 1983.167).
