RARE. The BL copy lacks volume IV. First published as Les Voyageurs en Suisse (Paris, 1803, 3 vols., 8°). The translator comments in the Advertisement: "Novels, in general, are little more than the history of amorous adventures, and of the incidents of polished life. M. Lantier has successfully endeavoured to avoid the inanity of these compositions, and to blend with the transports of love, and the refinements of elegance, the maxims of the philosopher, the discoveries of the naturalist, and the anecdotes of the historian." However, we are told his quotations and extracts have been omitted or curtailed, being "often burthensome to the story" and "too learned for the generality of readers."
