Il est représenté assis sur une base rocheuse. Non émaillée, sa gueule féroce est encadrée par ses larges oreilles et est surmontée par des cornes et crêtes flammées. Son corps et la base sont recouverts de coulures de glaçures verte, brune et ocre.

Guardian figures with ferocious aspects were buried in the entrances of tombs and served to protect the dead from threatening evil spirits. The present lot may be compared with the pair of sancai-glazed earth spirits from the Irving Collection that sold at Christie's New York, 21 March 2019, lot 1227.

The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test no. C122j86, 11 October 2022, is consistent with the dating of this lot.
