John Liston was a British actor 1776-1846, who played the characters portrayed in this puzzle, as listed in the Catalogue of dramatic portraits in theatre by Lilian Arilla Hall published 1932. At the time this puzzle was first produced in the 1840s, actors like Liston and Garrick were popular cult figures whose roles would be widely recognized by the general public.
