Employés en tant qu'armes de guerre ou d’apparat, la plupart se caractérisent par leur grande qualité plastique. Ce résultat découle d'une combinaison de deux talents : d'une part, le travail accompli d'un artiste-forgeron, en charge de forger une lame d’une grande élégance, et d’autre part, la réalisation raffinée et sophistiquée du manche par un maître-sculpteur. Ce dernier ornait le pommeau d'une représentation de l’emblème clanique qui, selon les cas, pouvait être un ours, un loup, un aigle, une chouette ou un tout autre animal totémique.
