A RARE RETICULATED FAHUA JAR, GUAN
MING DYNASTY (1368-1644)
The jar has a broad, tapering body decorated with scenes of scholars, some on horseback and some accompanied by attendants, alternating with mythical beast masks and beaded roundels suspending various emblems and tassels. The scenes are set within a continuous openwork landscape, which incorporates the façade of a building with a figure emerging from a door, all below geese and florets on the shoulder and honeycomb pattern on the neck, and above a band of petal lappets encircling the foot, all picked out in turquoise, yellow, yellowish-brown and white on a dark blue ground, and the interior is covered with a thin turquoise glaze.
14 in. (35.5 cm.) diam.
