rectangular box with rounded corners, the sides and base set with panels of peak-pattern engine-turning between raised vari-colour gold foliate borders and pilasters, the sablé cover applied with vari-colour scrolling gold foliage and centred with a later oval portrait miniature of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia (1798-1860), née Princes Charlotte of Prussia, on ivory, within a blue enamel frame and four raised flower-heads

Alexandra Feodorovna (1798-1860) was born Princess Charlotte of Prussia and was Empress consort of Russia. She was the wife of Emperor Nicholas I, and mother of Emperor Alexander II. Charlotte was born the eldest surviving daughter of Frederick William III of Prussia, and Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. At the death of her brother in law, Tsar Alexander I of Russia, in December 1825, Alexandra’s husband became the new Russian emperor.
