FORMER COLLECTION OF VICTOR BERET (1871-1920), FRANCEVictor Beret was a member of the French military, and made two trips to China. The first trip was in 1892 and the second was in 1901, when he served on Le Redoutable, the same ship on which the famous French writer, Pierre Loti, was travelling. Victor Beret later became General Secretary of the Suez Company in 1917. When he came back in Paris, his French residence, boulevard Saint Germain, was decorated with works of art and textiles he brought back for his travels.

Le grand vêtement de soie rectangulaire à fond or est divisé en plusieurs colonnes, certains petits panneaux abritent des mantra brodés en noir. La bordure est brodée de mantra et caractères Lantsha en noir parmi les lotus épanouis dans des rinceaux multicolores. Les quatre angles sont également brodés de fleurs de lotus en fils d'or. Elle est doublée d'une soie jaune damassée ornée de motifs bouddhistes.

The Kasaya, or the Buddhist priest's robe was reserved for special ceremonial occasions. The rectangular form also permitted other uses as a drapery or hanging. The patchwork kasaya recalls of the monastic patchy robes made of rags worn by beggar monks who took a vow of poverty.
