IZAPAN STONE YOKE

The closed basalt yoke of ovoid form with the shorter end slightly concave, bare of design with the exception of a raised rim encircling the length of the object on both sides.
Yokes form part of the paraphernalia of the ancient Mesoamerican ball game. Played as early as 200 B.C. in the Gulf Coast region, the ritual sport spread over time through Mexico, Guatemala, Central America and to the Caribbean islands. This abstract yoke might have been a trophy or a funerary object.

Ce joug de forme ovoïde fermée avec une partie resserrée vers la base comporte une exceptionnelle décoration à pans coupés de chaque cotés au bas des parties longilignes.
Les jougs faisaient partie de l’ensemble des objets rattachés au Jeu de Balle des civilisations de l’ancienne Mésoamérique. Pratiqué dans la région côtière du golfe du Mexique dès 200 av. JC, ce jeu s’est développé au travers du Mexique et du Guatemala en Amérique Centrale, et même jusqu’aux Iles Caraïbes. Le type de joug abstrait proposé ici peut avoir servi de trophée ou d’offrande funéraire.
